‘Manon’ in Vienna

Diana Damrau sings the title role in Massenet’s Manon this month at the Vienna State Opera. This is quickly becoming a signature role for Ms. Damrau, whose portrayal at The Metropolitan Opera last season thrilled audiences and critics alike: “. . . an assertive Manon, jumping at every challenge. From her coltish Act I to the discovery of passion and then materialism, she nailed each phase in what Balzac called “les splendeurs et misères des courtisanes”; she also dramatized her character’s conflicts.” (Opera News)

Performances in Vienna take place February 14, 19, 22, 25 & 28. Ms. Damrau is joined by a starry international cast in this production, including Ramón Vargas as Des Grieux, Dan Paul Dumitrescu as Le Comte Des Grieux, and Boaz Daniel as Lescaut, with conductor Frédéric Chaslin leading from the pit.
