“In Torino where it was performed this month in a staging by Damiano Michieletto and with no less than three performances, Lucia di Lammermoor now traveled to the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, leaving the static sets and costumes but not from this theater, without which the opera is only music. The very name of Diana Damrau, a person today as known as Eddy Merckx in his time by the yellow jersey was enough to fill the room . . .

Rest assured Diana Damrau, such that in herself this is a role in which is ingrained . . . All features of the soprano – and God knows if the range is wide – are designed in accordance with its role of design. A blonde Lucia, not by platinum hair color but by the grace of a crystalline tone and a voice of light spirit – as opposed to the dark Lucia generated by Callas and her followers; this Lucia is affirmed, voluntarily, of a modernity that contradicts the image of the woman whose Donizettienne heroine, according to Catherine Clément, would mark the defeat; Lucia hailed her first aria, returned at intermission, to a standing ovation at the end of the evening, triumphant.”

Reste Diana Damrau, telle qu’en elle-même dans un rôle dont elle est imprégnée . . . Tout ce que propose la soprano – et Dieu sait si la proposition est vaste – est pensé en accord avec sa conception du rôle. Lucia blonde, non par la couleur platine de ses cheveux mais par la grâce d’un timbre cristallin et d’une voix d’essence légère – par opposition aux Lucia brunes engendrées par Callas et ses épigones ; Lucia affirmée, volontaire, d’une modernité qui contredit l’image de la femme dont l’héroïne donizettienne, d’après Catherine Clément, marquerait la défaite ; Lucia acclamée dès son premier air, rappelée à l’entracte, applaudie debout à la fin de la soirée, triomphante.}

“For this sold-out to the ceiling event, the cast could not be otherwise than the top. Diana Damrau is a German soprano among the most famous in the world. His virtuosity in the upper register is effortless while the clarity of her diction emphasizes her perfect technique to communicate a vivid emotion.”

{Pour cet évènement sold out des caves au plafond, le casting ne pouvait être autrement qu’au diapason. Diana Damrau est une soprano allemande parmi les plus illustres de la planète. Sa virtuosité dans les suraigus coupe le souffle tandis que la clarté de sa diction soulignent sa technique parfaite pour communiquer une émotion saisissante.}
