News - The latest about Diana’s engagements and recordings

This spring, Diana Damrau makes her debut as Amalia in Verdi’s I Masnadieri at the Bayerische Staatsoper. Fairly unknown, this opera’s plot is bursting under high-pressure from the very beginning.

Based on Schiller’s The Robbers, Verdi wrote I masnadieri upping the stakes from the play: instead of combating social grievances, in the opera all the characters struggle to keep up with a family story that is laden with early loss and brotherly rivalry, with suppressed desire and misunderstood needs. The political conflict of The Robbers is intensified on the personal level in Verdi’s opera.

Johannes Erath, who had already staged Un ballo in maschera in Munich with an interpretation that profoundly explores the characters, stages this opera as a chamber play of overflowing dimensions. Michele Mariotti leads from the pit, and Charles Castronovo, Mika Kares, Igor Golovatenko, Kevin Conners, Callum Thorpe and Dean Power complete the cast. The performances take place from March 8 – March 26.

Listen LIVE to the premiere on March 8 at 17:30 CET/ 12:30 pm EDT via BR-Klassik.
